Following the report of a missing person and a difficult nocturnal search operation, shortly after midnight on 05.02 an avalanche slightly south of the Breiteggspitze in the western Kitzbühel Alps was discovered. Two persons were located with the help of an LVS beacon. They were dug out of the avalanche but had already died.
The avalanche triggered on an extremely steep W/NW-facing ridgeline slope at approximately 1850 m. The backcountry tourers were in the descent when the slab avalanche released. Also in this fatal avalanche accident, we will undertake a meticulous accident analysis together with the Alpine Police and report our findings in a blog as soon as possible.
